Echocardiograms

3 min read

Our experienced radiology team is equipped to perform echocardiograms, a non-invasive imaging technique that plays a crucial role in assessing heart health.

What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is a specialized ultrasound examination that provides detailed images of the heart's structure and function. It utilizes sound waves to create real-time visualizations, allowing healthcare professionals to assess the chambers, valves, and blood flow within the heart without the use of radiation.

Why is an echocardiogram ordered?

Echocardiograms are recommended for various reasons, including:

  • Heart function evaluation: To assess the overall function and pumping capacity of the heart.
  • Structural analysis: To examine the heart's valves, chambers, and walls for any abnormalities or defects.
  • Detection of heart conditions: To identify conditions such as heart murmurs, blood clots, or infections.
  • Monitoring treatment: For individuals with known heart conditions, echocardiograms help monitor the effectiveness of treatment.

What to expect

During the procedure you will lie on an examination table in a relaxed position. A special gel is applied to your chest to facilitate the transmission of sound waves. The transducer, a small handheld device, will be moved gently across your chest to capture images. The images will appear on a monitor in real-time, allowing the sonographer to assess the heart's structure and function. Contrast enhanced imaging may be utilized to further evaluate structures.

Benefits of echocardiograms

  • Precise diagnosis: Provides detailed and accurate information about the heart's condition.
  • Timely monitoring: Essential for ongoing assessment and monitoring of heart health.
  • Contrast-enhanced echocardiograms: Elevate cardiac imaging with enhanced clarity, allowing for more detailed evaluations of heart function and structure.
